MILITARY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The Military Institute of Technology (MILIT), Pune is a tri-services training institution of India's Ministry of Defence, located at Girinagar on the southern bank of Khadakwasla Lake, Pune. Its forerunner, the Institute of Armament Studies, was established in 1952 within the College of Military Engineering, Dapodi, initially conducting the Technical Staff Officers' Course. In 1967 it was renamed the Institute of Armament Technology and relocated to its present site. It became a Deemed University in 1999 and was renamed Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in 2006. On 19 January 2012, MILIT was bifurcated from DIAT to focus solely on training needs of the Indian Armed Forces. MILIT trains officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as friendly foreign countries, for command and staff appointments, primarily through the Defence Services Technical Staff Course (DSTSC), successful completion of which awards an M.Sc in Military Technology from Pune University. The campus spans 496 acres, divided into a Technical Complex with academic and administrative facilities and a Residential Complex with accommodations and amenities. MILIT conducts 23 courses of varying durations for officers with 9 to 14 years of service, mostly at the rank of lieutenant colonel or major and equivalent.
