Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) is a film and television institute located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Named after Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, it provides higher and professional education and technical expertise in the art and technique of film-making and television production. The Institute was established in 1995 and registered as a society on 18 August 1995 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961. It is an autonomous society funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. Its first session began on 1 September 1996, and Dr. Debasish Majumdar joined as the institute's first director in 1997. On 2 September 2024, following a UGC recommendation, the Institute received a letter of intent from the Ministry of Education to fulfil requirements for University status. The Institute has faced allegations of sexual assault and harassment, including incidents in 2015, 2023, and 2024 involving staff and students. Notable faculty include Subrata Mitra, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shakti Samanta, and Ashoke Viswanathan. Notable alumni include filmmakers such as Amal Neerad, Sagar Ballary, Kanu Behl, and editor Namrata Rao, among others working in direction, cinematography, and editing.
