The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), commonly known as the National Law School (NLS), is a state law university in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, established under the Karnataka Act No. 22 of 1986. It is regarded as one of India's most elite legal education institutions and has consistently topped the NIRF law rankings. Founded through efforts by figures such as Mohammad Hidayatullah, Ram Jethmalani, and Upendra Baxi, with N. R. Madhava Menon as its founding Vice-Chancellor, NLSIU introduced case-method teaching modeled on Harvard Law School, earning it the nickname "Harvard of the East." The university offers a five-year BA LLB (Hons) programme, a one-year LLM, a BA (Hons) programme, a three-year LLB (Hons) postgraduate programme, a Master's in Public Policy, and doctoral degrees. Admissions are conducted via CLAT for most programmes and NLSAT for others. The university operates on a 23-acre campus in Nagarbhavi, housing India's largest legal library, and hosts events like the NLS Debate and Strawberry Fields festival. It is the only Indian institute to have won the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, and 25 of its alumni have been Rhodes Scholars. The Chief Justice of India serves as its Visitor and de facto Chancellor, while Sudhir Krishnaswamy has served as Vice-Chancellor since 2019.
