National Atmospheric Research Laboratory
The National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL) is an autonomous research institute funded by the Department of Space of the Government of India. It is engaged in fundamental and applied research in the field of Atmospheric Sciences. The institute began in 1992 as the National Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) Radar Facility, known as NMRF. Over the years, additional facilities were added to the institution, including a Mie/Rayleigh Lidar, a Lower atmospheric wind profiler, an optical rain gauge, a disdrometer, and automated weather stations. As these capabilities expanded, the NMRF grew into a full-fledged research institute. On 22 September 2005, it was officially renamed the National Atmospheric Research Laboratory, reflecting its broadened scope beyond the original MST radar focus. NARL continues to operate as a center dedicated to studying atmospheric phenomena using a range of specialized instruments and facilities, supported by government funding through the Department of Space.
