Historically, Safdarjung Hospital began as a medical centre established for American troops during the Second World War, later handed over to the Indian government. It became a centre for postgraduate training in 1962 under the University of Delhi, and was associated with University College of Medical Sciences from 1973 to 1990. With the establishment of Indraprastha University in 1998, the hospital was merged with Vardhman Mahavir Medical College. The hospital is also known for advancements in surgical techniques, including the introduction of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in 1994.
