North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), formerly the Regional Research Laboratory, is a constituent establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India's national R&D organization with laboratories across the country. Established in 1961 under CSIR's chemical science group, it originally aimed to develop indigenous technologies utilizing the natural resources of northeastern India, including petroleum, coal, natural gas, minerals, tea, microbes, and aromatic and medicinal plants. Today, NEIST is a multidisciplinary research institution covering areas such as Advanced Computation and Data Science, Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry, Biotechnology, Infectious Disease research, Geoscience, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Civil and Chemical Engineering, Material Science, and Coal research. It operates a Common Facility Centre under the STINER project funded by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, aiming to bring technologies to farmers and artisans in the region. During COVID-19, NEIST conducted an online Summer Research Training Program, hosted a Drug Discovery Hackathon training, and set up a COVID-19 testing laboratory. The institute is organized into eight research and development divisions, led by Director Dr. Virendra M Tiwari. It maintains branch laboratories in Naharlagun (Arunachal Pradesh) and Imphal (Manipur), along with an experimental farm in Mokokchung, Nagaland.
