HEWETT POLYTECHNIC
The institution now known as Government Polytechnic Lucknow began in 1892 as the Government Industrial School, sanctioned in 1891 by a committee under Sir Auckland Colvin, Lieutenant-Governor of North-Western Provinces and Chief Commissioner of Oudh. It opened on 1 November 1892 near Lucknow Charbagh railway station, initially training children of artisans and railway employees, and later preparing students for Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee. In August 1907, Sir John P. Hewett, Lieutenant-Governor of United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, convened an Industrial Conference at Naini Tal that recommended upgrading the school to technical level, leading to its transformation into Government Technical School in 1911. The school expanded between 1913 and 1915, adding new courses, including mechanical apprentice classes transferred from Thomason College. By 1916, enrollment had risen to 111 students. After Indian independence, it was renamed Government Polytechnic Lucknow in 1961 and relocated to Polytechnic Chauraha. Today, it offers post-HSC non-degree courses such as a three-year architectural assistantship, three-year diploma programs in various engineering fields, and one-year postgraduate diploma courses, remaining affiliated with BTEUP and AICTE.
