Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur

Nagpur Veterinary College, located in Nagpur, central India, was established in 1958 with the objective of producing graduates in veterinary sciences and animal husbandry to serve the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra. Its initial intake capacity was 45 students. In 1969, the college was transferred to Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola, as a constituent college, after which its intake capacity was increased to 65, then 100, before being reduced to 80 and later to 61. During this period, postgraduate courses were introduced in nine subjects, each with an intake of two seats. From the academic year 2001/2002, the college was transferred to Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University. Each year, about 10 to 15 students are selected for postgraduate admissions at other colleges across India under the ICAR programme, while many others pursue biomedical research abroad, particularly in the USA and Europe. The college has a large alumni network, including the Alumni Association of Nagpur Veterinary College in the USA (AANUNVC). In 2005, the college established a Competitive Examination Study Centre and a Placement Cell to assist students with career development. The college maintains affiliations with the Indian Council of Agriculture Research, State Agricultural University, State Animal Husbandry Department, Maharashtra Veterinary Council, Veterinary Council of India, and State Veterinary Universities.
