National Institute of Technology Meghalaya (NIT Meghalaya or NITM) is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India, established as an Institution of National Importance with funding from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Set up in 2010 under the NIT Act, it began offering courses at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat, before academic activities moved to Shillong's Bijni Complex at North Eastern Hill University in 2012. The foundation stone for its permanent campus in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), East Khasi Hills, was laid in October 2012 by Kapil Sibal. The permanent campus, spanning about 300 acres, is being constructed by the Central Public Works Department, with Phase I including academic buildings, hostels, residences, a guest house, health centre, auditorium, and indoor stadium, at an estimated cost of Rs. 300 crores. The institute offers B.Tech., M.Tech., Ph.D., and MSc programmes across departments including Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering. Admission to B.Tech. programmes is through JEE (Main) and CSAB counseling, while MSc admissions are through JAM. NIT Meghalaya was ranked 68th among engineering colleges in India by NIRF in 2024. Its Central Library holds around 13,000 books and provides access to digital resources from ACM, IEEE, and ASME.
