NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

The National Institutes of Design (NID) form a group of autonomous public design institutes in India, with the first and primary institute established in 1961 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This primary institute has extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. Other NIDs are located in Kurukshetra, Amaravati, Jorhat, and Bhopal, with the creation of four additional NIDs suggested under the central government's 2007 National Design Policy. The Union Budget 2026-27 proposed a new NID in Eastern India as part of regional expansion. NID institutes function autonomously under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and are recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research as a scientific and industrial research organisation. They hold the status of Institutes of National Importance under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014. Admissions are conducted through the NID Design Aptitude Test (NID-DAT), a two-stage national entrance examination organized by the NID Admissions Cell. Academic offerings span disciplines such as graphic design, product design, interior design, filmmaking, and animation, with degrees including Bachelor of Design (B.Des.), Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD), Master of Design (M.Des.), and doctoral programs (PhD).
