COLLEGE OF FISHERIES

College of Fisheries, Raha (COF) is an academic institution located at Raha, Assam, established in 1988 to offer specialized education in fisheries science, particularly to serve the North Eastern region of India. The idea originated from discussions at the 1982 ICAR Region II Committee Meeting, leading to a 1985 proposal funded on a 70:30 basis by ICAR and the Assam Government. Though the ICAR Accreditation Committee initially proposed starting the program at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, the Government of Assam recommended relocating it to Raha. The college began its academic program in 1987-88 with three lecturers and part-time teachers covering subjects like language, economics, and chemistry. It offers a 4-year B.F.Sc. undergraduate program, including In-Plant Training and Hands-on Training in later semesters, as well as an M.F.Sc. postgraduate program. The college has been involved in various workshops and projects, including sustainable aquaculture training, Biofloc Fish Farming units with NABARD, and collaborations with institutions like Tuskegee University. It also has a student representative body called the College of Fisheries Students Union (COFSU).
