NORTH EAST REGIONAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

The North-East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), located in Shillong, is one of the constituent units of the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) system, which falls under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi. The RIEs were established in 1963 by the Government of India across different regions of the country with the aim of qualitatively improving school education through innovative pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes, along with relevant research, development, and extension activities. NERIE specifically caters to the in-service educational needs of teachers and teacher educators in the North-Eastern States of India. However, pre-service teacher preparation programmes for the North-East Region are handled by RIE, Bhubaneswar, rather than NERIE itself. Unlike the RIEs at Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Mysore, NERIE does not have a Demonstration Multipurpose School attached to it, as such schools are only mentioned for the other four institutes. NCERT serves as the supreme administrative authority overseeing all regional institutes, including NERIE, controlling their administrative affairs.
