Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a network of autonomous public engineering, technology and research universities in India, established in 1950 and governed under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which designates them as Institutes of National Importance. IIT Ropar was among eight new IITs set up between 2008 and 2009, alongside institutes in Gandhinagar, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Indore, Patna, Bhubaneswar, and Mandi, as part of the government's plan to expand the IIT system following recommendations from the S K Joshi Committee and the 11th Five Year Plan, which identified eight states for new IITs to address regional imbalance. Each IIT, including Ropar, operates autonomously but is linked to others through the IIT Council, chaired by the Minister of Education, which oversees administration. The organisational structure places the President of India as ex officio visitor, with the IIT Council below, followed by each institute's board of governors, director, deputy director, and deans. No further specific details about IIT Ropar's founding date, affiliation, or website are provided in the text.
