MORARJI DESAI NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF YOGA

The Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) is an autonomous organisation functioning under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. It acts as the nodal agency for planning, training, promotion and coordination of yoga education, training, therapy and research. The institute originated in 1970 as a hospital under the Central Council for Research in Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy, operating within the Vishwayatan Yogashram. In 1976 it was converted into an institute named the Central Research Institute for Yoga (CRIY), aimed at providing free training and conducting yoga research. In 1988, it was renamed the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga with an expanded mandate. The institute is housed on a 2.818-acre campus equipped with a conference hall, auditorium, library, practice hall, academic block, out-patient facility, laboratory, x-ray unit and multimedia centre. Its teaching department is divided into eight sub-sections covering yoga education, therapy, philosophy, human consciousness, anatomy, physiology, allied sciences and languages. MDNIY offers diploma and certificate courses in yoga science, organizes the annual Yoga Mahotsav since 2016, and manages four yoga therapy centres in Delhi. It also publishes several books and a quarterly journal called Yoga Vijnana.
