Malda College
Malda College is situated in English Bazar, Malda district, West Bengal, India, along National Highway 12. Its origins trace back to a pre-partition temporary college at Dadanchak, which was relocated to Malda after local residents raised funds. The University of Calcutta granted affiliation on 1 May 1944, and the college was officially established on 23 July 1944 by District Magistrate W. H. Saumarez Smith as an 'Intermediate Arts and Commerce College' with eight teachers and 150 students. Initially affiliated to teach English, Vernacular Bengali, Philosophy, Economics, History, and Sanskrit, the college moved in 1952 to a new building at Rathbari More. Two auditoriums were built in 1994 to mark its golden jubilee. Today, the college is affiliated with the University of Gour Banga and offers postgraduate courses in Bengali, English, and History. It also serves as a study centre for Netaji Subhas Open University and hosts a branch of the Directorate of Distance Education, University of Burdwan, since 2013. The college publishes two UGC-approved journals and received a B+ NAAC grade in 2021. Notable alumni include Abu Nasar Khan Choudhury and Tapan Sikdar.
