College of Fisheries

College of Fisheries, Raha (COF) is located in Raha, Assam, and was established in 1988 to offer specialized education in fisheries science, aiming to provide technical expertise for the North Eastern region of India. The plan to start a fisheries science program at Assam Agricultural University began after discussions in the 1982 ICAR Region II Committee Meeting, with a proposal approved in 1985 under a 70:30 funding ratio between ICAR and the Assam Government. Though the ICAR Accreditation Committee suggested starting the program at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, the Government of Assam recommended moving it to Raha. The college began its academic program in 1987-88 with three lecturers and part-time teachers, and started its 4-year B.F.Sc. program the same year. The college now offers undergraduate (B.F.Sc.) and postgraduate (M.F.Sc.) programs, including In-Plant Training and Hands-on Training components. It has conducted training programs, partnered with NABARD on Biofloc Fish Farming units, hosted student visits, and welcomed an international delegation from Tuskegee University. The college has a student representative body called the College of Fisheries Students Union (COFSU).
