West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata

The West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS) is a public state veterinary university in West Bengal, India, established on 2 January 1995 by an Act of the West Bengal legislature. It emerged from the century-old Bengal Veterinary College, founded in 1893, which had functioned under the University of Calcutta until 1974 and was later merged with Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya. In 1995, the veterinary and animal science departments were separated from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya to form WBUAFS. The university has three faculties: Veterinary and Animal Sciences (Belgachia, Kolkata and Mohanpur, Nadia), Fishery Sciences (Chakgaria, Kolkata), and Dairy Technology (Mohanpur, Nadia), with its headquarters in Belgachia, Kolkata. The Governor of West Bengal serves as chancellor, and Shyam Sundar Dana is the current Vice-chancellor. The university conducts research through its Directorate of Research, Extension and Farms, along with three Krishi Vigyan Kendras. It offers diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. programs in veterinary science, dairy technology, and fishery sciences, following curricula set by the Veterinary Council of India and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission, accredited by ICAR, and ranked 29th nationally by ICAR and 26th by NIRF in 2023.
