The National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT-Warangal) is a public technical and research university in Warangal, India, established in 1959 as the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, the first among 15 Regional Engineering Colleges in the country. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 10 October 1959, and classes began that September in temporary sheds before moving to the permanent Kazipet campus in 1963. Over the decades, the institute added programs including Chemical Engineering (1964), Metallurgical Engineering (1965), Electronics and Communication Engineering (1971), Computer Science and Engineering (BTech 1983, MTech 1987), MBA (2000), and Biotechnology (2006). It was affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University until 1976, then with Kakatiya University until it gained deemed university status in 2002, when it was renamed National Institute of Technology, Warangal. In 2007, it was conferred Institute of National Importance status. The institute became a mentoring institute for NIT Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2019. The campus includes facilities such as the Dr VA Sastry Centre for Innovation and Incubation, a shopping centre, post office, dispensary, and a State Bank of India branch with ATMs. Admissions are conducted through JEE-Main, GATE, NIMCET, CAT/MAT, and JAM examinations for various programs.
