ICAR-National Institute for Research on Commercial Agriculture (ICAR-NIRCA), formerly known as ICAR-Central Tobacco Research Institute (ICAR-CTRI), is a central research institute situated at Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established in 1947 under the aegis of the Indian Central Tobacco Committee (ICTC), which had been constituted by the Government of India in 1945 to improve tobacco research, quality control, and production. In 1965, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) took over the functioning of the institute. In 2025, the institute's name was changed from ICAR-CTRI to ICAR-NIRCA to broaden its research mandate beyond tobacco to include other high-value commercial crops such as Chilli, Turmeric, Ashwagandha, and Castor. The institute operates six regional research stations located at Guntur, Kandukuru, and Jeelugumilli in Andhra Pradesh, as well as at Hunsur in Karnataka, Vedasandur in Tamil Nadu, and Dinhata in West Bengal. The institute has produced numerous publications related to tobacco research, covering topics such as germplasm diversity, pest and disease management, irrigation, and weed control.
