Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), also locally known as the Tata Institute, is a public deemed research university in Bengaluru, Karnataka, dedicated to science, engineering, design, and management. It was founded in 1909 following an initiative by Jamsetji Tata, who was encouraged by Swami Vivekananda, with land donated by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and financial contributions from Tata and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The institute's constitution was approved by the Viceroy, and it admitted its first students in 1911 in Chemistry and Electro-Technology. Morris Travers was its first director, while C.V. Raman was its first Indian director. IISc became a deemed university in 1958 and was recognized as an Institute of Eminence in 2018. It introduced India's first master's programs in engineering and later launched integrated doctoral programs in natural sciences. In 2005, a terrorist attack on campus killed a visiting professor. In 2022, IISc received a large private donation to establish a postgraduate medical institute. Its main campus spans about 400 acres in northern Bengaluru, housing over 40 departments, hostels, canteens, and sports facilities, and is close to other research institutions like ISRO and the Raman Research Institute.
