Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) is a public university situated in Aurangabad, also known as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, in the state of Maharashtra. It was established on 23 August 1958 and is named after Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar, an Indian social reformer and political leader who chaired the committee that drafted the Constitution of India. The university spans 725 acres, making it the largest university in Maharashtra in terms of total area. In 1978, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the state legislature, and the university administration approved renaming the institution after B. R. Ambedkar, a decision that was strongly opposed by other communities and led to an anti-Dalit pogrom. This sparked the Namantar Andolan, a renaming movement organised by Dalits that lasted 16 years. On 14 January 1994, the university was officially renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Since its establishment, the university has affiliated around 456 colleges spread across six districts in Maharashtra: Aurangabad, Beed, Jalna, Latur, Osmanabad, and Parbhani. These affiliated colleges offer programs in fields such as arts, science, commerce, engineering, pharmacy, education, law, and management.
