Hill College

Hill College is a public community college in Hillsboro, Texas, established under authorization from the Texas Attorney General in 1921 and first enrolling students in September 1923 as Hillsboro Junior College, the first municipal junior college chartered in Texas and the first four-year junior college in the country. It closed in 1950 and reopened in 1962 under the name Hill Junior College after a bond issue funded a new campus; the district expanded to include Hillsboro, Abbott, Bynum, Covington, Itasca, and Whitney. In 1974, an extension center was opened in Cleburne, Texas, which grew into the Johnson County Campus with over 1,000 students. The word "junior" was dropped from the name in 1985, forming Hill College. The college's service area includes Bosque, Hill, Johnson, and Somervell counties. Hill College also operates the Texas Heritage Museum, which contains galleries on Texas military history, a Historical Research Center with over 10,000 volumes, and the Hill College Press, which has published numerous books on Texas history. Academically, Hill College offers Associate in Arts, Associate in Applied Science degrees, and certificates.
