College of Fisheries

College of Fisheries, Raha (COF) is an academic institution located at Raha, Assam, established in 1988 to offer specialized education in fisheries science, particularly to meet the technical manpower needs of the North Eastern region of India. The idea originated from discussions at the 1982 ICAR Region II Committee Meeting, and a formal proposal for the college was approved in 1985 with funding shared 70:30 between ICAR and the Assam Government. Although the ICAR Accreditation Committee initially suggested starting the program at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Khanapara, the Assam Government recommended relocating it to Raha. The college began its academic program in 1987-88 with three lecturers and part-time staff for supportive subjects. It offers a 4-year B.F.Sc. undergraduate program, including In-Plant Training and Hands-on Training in the final two semesters, as well as an M.F.Sc. postgraduate program. The college has been involved in various outreach activities, including training programs on sustainable aquaculture, partnerships with NABARD for Biofloc Fish Farming units, and collaborations with international institutions such as Tuskegee University. It also has a student representative body known as the College of Fisheries Students Union (COFSU).
