LUCKNOW POLYTECHNIC LUCKNOW

Government Polytechnic Lucknow, also known as GP Lucknow or GPL, is an Indian polytechnic institution providing tertiary technical education through vocational courses. It traces its origins to 1891, when a committee set up by Sir Auckland Colvin recommended establishing an industrial school in Lucknow or Allahabad. The school was sanctioned in July 1892 and opened as the Government Industrial School on 1 November 1892, initially training children of artisans and railway employees, and later preparing students for Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee. It was first located near Lucknow Charbagh railway station. Following recommendations from the 1907 Industrial Conference at Naini Tal, the school was upgraded to technical level, becoming the Government Technical School in 1911. It expanded between 1913–15 with new courses, including mechanical apprentice classes transferred from Thomason College. By 1916, enrollment had surpassed 100 students. After Indian independence, it was renamed Government Polytechnic Lucknow in 1961 and relocated to Polytechnic Chauraha, about 12 km from Lucknow Junction. Today, it offers post-HSC diploma and certificate programs, including architectural assistantship and engineering diplomas.
