Shree Jagannath Sanskrit University, also known as Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, is a Sanskrit language university situated in Puri, Odisha, India. It was founded as a teaching-cum-affiliating university when Chief Minister Prajnana Vachaspati Sj. Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, a Sanskrit scholar, laid its foundation on 7 July 1981 at Mouza Balukhand, aiming to promote research and higher studies in the Sanskrit language. The institution is named after Jagannath, a deity in Hinduism, and is regarded as the third oldest Sanskrit university in India. Academically, it offers degrees at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Siksha Shastri (B.Ed), Visisthacharya (M.Phil), Vidyavaridhi (Ph.D), and D.Litt levels across various Sanskrit-related fields. The university has eight postgraduate departments—Advaita Vedanta, Dharmashastra, Jyotirvigyan, Nyaya, Sahitya, Sarvadarshan, Veda, and Vyakarana—along with a Siksha Shastri (B.Ed.) department that began in the 2012-13 academic session. It affiliates 167 Sanskrit Higher Secondary Schools (Upashastri) and 138 Sanskrit Degree Colleges (Shastri) in Odisha, with 94 under permanent affiliation, and was accredited with a B+ Grade by the NAAC Peer Team in July 2016. The university provides facilities such as a Central Library, Health Centre, hostels, a Computer Application Centre, a Centre of Advanced Research in Sanskrit (CARS), and a Manuscript Resource Centre in collaboration with the National Mission for Manuscripts.
