Panjab University (PU) is a collegiate public state university located in Chandigarh, India, funded by both State and Union governments and considered a state university. It traces its origins to the University of the Punjab in Lahore, founded in 1882. After the partition of India, it was re-established as East Punjab University on 1 October 1947, initially headquartered in Solan with departments scattered across northern India. It later relocated to a self-contained campus in Sector 14, Chandigarh, and was renamed Panjab University in 1950. The university is accredited by NAAC with an A++ grade and is considered the top university in Punjab and Haryana. It has 78 teaching and research departments, 10 centres/chairs, and 201 affiliated colleges across eight districts of Punjab and the union territory of Chandigarh, with regional centres in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Ludhiana, and Hoshiarpur. The residential campus spans 220 hectares across Sectors 14 and 25 in Chandigarh, featuring a chequerboard layout designed by Pierre Jeanneret. It includes hostels, a sports complex, a health centre, and landmarks such as Gandhi Bhawan and the Student Centre. In 2024, it became one of the first Indian universities to introduce menstrual leave for female students.
