Govt College of Art Sector-10
The Government College of Art, Chandigarh is an art institute in Sector 10 C, Chandigarh, India, established in 1951 by S. L. Prashar. It is one of the first three art institutions in India, with a history tracing back 132 years to the Mayo School of Industrial Art, founded in Lahore in 1875 under first principal John Lockwood Kipling, now known as the National College of Arts, Lahore. After the Partition of India, the institution was re-established on 16 August 1951 as the Government School of Art and Craft in Shimla, then capital of Punjab, later becoming the Government College of Art and Craft, Chandigarh, under the Chandigarh Administration. In 1962, when Chandigarh became the new capital of Punjab, the school moved to its current location, adjoining the Government Museum and Art Gallery, within a Cultural Complex designed by architect Le Corbusier. The campus features the Dhanraj Bhagat Sculpture Park, established in 2010, and the S L Prashar Art Gallery, inaugurated in 2012. The college offers graduate and postgraduate degrees in Painting, Sculpture, Print Making, and Applied Art, along with diploma courses, including a special diploma for deaf and mute or mentally challenged students since 2012.
