The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru (UAS Bengaluru), was established on 21 August 1964 under Mysore State Government Act No. 22 of 1963, arising from recommendations of Indo-American teams and a committee led by Ralph W. Cummings of the Rockefeller Foundation. Its roots go back to an Experimental Agricultural Station set up at Hebbal in 1900 on land donated by the Wodeyars, where Adolf Lehmann and later Leslie Coleman conducted research, and where the Hebbal Agricultural School was founded in 1913, later becoming Mysore Agricultural College. The university was inaugurated by Vice President Zakir Husain in the presence of Chester Bowles and S. Nijalingappa. K.C. Naik served as its first Vice Chancellor. It initially included the agricultural colleges at Hebbal and Dharwad, the Veterinary College at Hebbal, the Fisheries College at Mangalore, and numerous research stations. A GKVK campus was added in 1969, inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with buildings designed by architect Achyut Kanvinde. In 1986, the university was bifurcated into University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, and University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, based on territorial jurisdiction. In 2005, veterinary and animal sciences faculties were separated into the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University.
