IIIT Bangalore was established on 18 September 1998 as the International Institute of Information Technology, initially housed at International Tech Park, Bangalore, with Prof. S. Sadagopan as founding Director. The institute relocated to its present campus in Electronics City in August 2003. On 4 July 2021, Prof. Sadagopan handed over the directorship to Prof. Debabrata Das. The university offers B.Tech, Integrated M.Tech, M.Tech, M.S. (Research), M.Sc. (Digital Society), and Ph.D. degrees, along with postgraduate diploma and certificate programmes. It has qualified for the ICPC World Finals in 2017, 2018, and 2026, supported by the student-run club CAMP. The fully residential campus includes three hostels: Lilavati for women and Bhaskara and Visveswaraya for men, with a shared mess in Bhaskara. Student festivals include Synergy, Infin8, Spandan, and Umang. The institute established an Innovation Centre in 2009, running accelerator programmes for startups in areas like AI, Mobile Apps, Bots, Conversational Interfaces, and Augmented Reality. It is governed by a Board chaired by Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys, and is self-funded through research and internal revenues.
