Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai

The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) began on 1 October 1933 as the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) of the University of Mumbai, founded by vice chancellor Sir Vitthal N. Chandavarkar to serve Mumbai's textile industry. It initially offered B.Sc. (Tech) courses in Textile Chemistry and Chemical Engineering to 15 students, held at the Royal Institute of Science before moving to its own campus in Matunga in 1943. Over the decades, it expanded into pharmaceuticals, food technology, plastics, paints, and general engineering, introducing a B.Pharm course in 1958 and B.Tech courses in 2001. The institute gained partial autonomy from the University of Mumbai in 1985, full autonomy in 2004, and was renamed the Institute of Chemical Technology upon receiving deemed university status on 12 September 2008, making it the only state-funded deemed university in India. In 2018, it was designated a Category 1 institute with graded autonomy and an institute of special status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the UGC. It also runs regional campuses in Bhubaneswar and Jalna, and has seen leadership transitions including Vice Chancellor Aniruddha B. Pandit and Chancellor Jyeshtharaj Bhalchandra Joshi.
