It is a non-profit educational institution founded by Sri Sathya Sai Baba on 22 November 1981. In 2022, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked the institute 101-150 among universities in India and 151-200 overall. In November 2023, the Casualty Actuarial Society awarded SSSIHL a 'Gold level' recognition under its University Recognition program, making it the only Asian university to receive this honor, following an earlier CAS Grant awarded in 2022.
