ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE GORAKHPUR

AIIMS Gorakhpur is a public medical university situated in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the 20 operational All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the country and was among the four 'Phase-IV' AIIMS announced in July 2014 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, alongside institutes planned for Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Vidarbha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on 22 July 2016. The institute's outpatient department (OPD) began operations on 24 February 2019, and its first batch of 50 MBBS students commenced studies later that year, making it one of six AIIMS to become operational in 2019. Surekha Kishor was appointed director in March 2020 but faced controversy after allegations in 2019 that she forced students to show private phone messages and confined them to their rooms; she was removed in January 2024 over financial irregularities and nepotism charges. As of August 2025, the OPD reported daily patient attendance between 4,000 and 5,000, indicating growing healthcare utilization at the institute.
