Midnapore City College

Midnapore College, founded in 1873, traces its origins to a private school established in 1834, which became a Zilla School in 1840 before evolving into a degree college under the University of Calcutta. Located in the heart of Midnapore city in Paschim Medinipur district, it is the oldest college in the undivided Midnapore district. The college played a significant role in the Indian independence movement, with several teachers and students, including five who became martyrs, involved in the freedom struggle. It became a government-sponsored degree college in 1956 and received UGC recognition in 1957. In 1985, its affiliation shifted from Calcutta University to Vidyasagar University. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across science and arts faculties, including subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Bengali, History, and Tourism & Aviation Management. It has been accredited by NAAC with an A+ grade and was ranked 42nd among Indian colleges by NIRF in 2025. The college has two hostels, a library, and facilities such as the N. C. Rana sky observation centre. In 2014–2015, it became the fourth college in West Bengal to receive autonomous status from the UGC.
