Goa University, Goa
Goa University is a public state university headquartered in Panaji, in the Indian state of Goa. Its traditions trace back to the 17th century with Portuguese-era institutions such as Goa Medical College (1691), the Mathematical and Military School (1817), and Goa College of Pharmacy (1842). After Goa's annexation, the University of Mumbai established a Centre for Post-Graduate Instruction and Research (CPIR) in Panaji, which affiliated the first colleges founded in 1962. Goa University was established under the Goa University Act of 1984 and began operations on 1 June 1985, replacing CPIR. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes and is accredited by NAAC with an A Grade. It is notable for offering western languages like Portuguese and French, including a unique Department of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies. The main campus, designed by Satish Gujral, sits on a 175-hectare site on the Taleigao Plateau, about 7 km from Panaji. It has 53 affiliated colleges, around 27,000 enrolled students, and several recognised research institutions, including the National Institute of Oceanography. Its library, established in 1958, holds over 158,000 books.
