Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai

The Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is an Indian deemed university established by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), unifying academic programmes of several of its constituent institutions. It is recognized as an institution of excellence under section 4(b) of the Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited HBNI with a CGPA of 3.40 on a four-point scale at A+ grade, valid up to 25 March 2026. The DAE, set up in 1954, recommended in 2003 that it establish a university-level institution, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced government approval for HBNI on 4 June 2005. It is named after physicist Homi J. Bhabha. HBNI was declared a deemed university along with ten Constituent Institutions. The Training School, established in 1957 at Trombay, Mumbai, develops government engineers in nuclear science and engineering, with courses conducted at all Constituent Institutions and BARC Training Schools. In 2024, NIRF ranked HBNI 6th in research, 16th among universities, and 27th overall in India. The Nature Index ranked HBNI 10th in the world in 2019 and second in India in 2020, behind the Indian Institute of Science.
