Midnapore College

Midnapore College, founded in 1873, traces its origins to a private school established in 1834, which later became a Zilla School in 1840 before becoming a degree college under the University of Calcutta in 1873. It became a first-grade degree science college in 1924. The college played a significant role in India's freedom movement, with several teachers dismissed for involvement in independence activities and five students becoming martyrs. After India's independence, it became a government-sponsored degree college in 1956 and received UGC recognition in 1957. In 1985, its affiliation shifted from Calcutta University to Vidyasagar University. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Science and Arts faculties, including subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Bengali, English, and Tourism & Aviation Management. It has been accredited by NAAC with an A+ grade in 2006 and 2017, and was ranked 42nd among colleges in India by NIRF in 2025. The college has hostels for male and female students, a library, and facilities like the N. C. Rana sky observation centre. In 2014–2015, it was granted autonomous status by the UGC, becoming the fourth college in West Bengal to receive this distinction.
