Basirhat College

Basirhat College was founded in mid-November 1947 on the banks of the river Icchamati. It was initially housed in Basirhat Town Hall before moving to the residence of Khan Bahadur A.F.M. Abdur Rahaman. Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee laid the foundation stone at the college's present location. The college began with a single Faculty of Arts (Humanities) comprising six departments, which later expanded to sixteen departments, including Geography and Education, approved by the University of Calcutta and the State Government in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Basirhat College operates in three shifts—morning, day, and evening—serving students from various local towns and villages. It offers bachelor's degrees in arts, science, and commerce, and has established a computer lab with automation software. The departments include Bengali, Arabic, History, Political Science, Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, English, Philosophy, Chemistry, Geography, Physiology, Education, and Sanskrit. The institution is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been awarded an 'A' grade by NAAC. Students can also benefit from the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (SVMCM), a West Bengal government scheme providing financial aid to economically weaker students pursuing higher education. The college is affiliated with West Bengal State University.
