Coimbatore Institute of Technology

Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT) is a government-aided autonomous engineering college in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, founded in 1956 by the V. Rangaswamy Naidu Educational Trust. Its founders were Prof. R. Venkataswamy Naidu, who served as Founder Correspondent from 1956 to 1994, and Prof. P. R. Ramakrishnan, who was Principal from 1956 to 1981 and Correspondent from 1994 to 2008. The institute was affiliated to Madras University from 1956 to 1980, then to Bharathiar University in 1980, and subsequently to Anna University in 2001. It is recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education, was granted autonomous status in 1987, and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. CIT offers 9 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate academic programmes, along with M.S. and Ph.D. research programmes. The CIT Sandwich Polytechnic College, established in 1961, offers 8 engineering diploma programmes. CIT was ranked in the 101-150 band in the NIRF engineering ranking of 2024. The institute has a vibrant student life with a students union comprising 20 clubs, technical symposia like Interface, Technovation, and Cyber Fest, and notable alumni including Natarajan Chandrasekaran, K. Krithivasan, and R. Prabhu.
