Silchar Medical College

Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) was established in 1960 in Silchar, southern Assam, as one of the oldest medical colleges in North East India. It came into being alongside Gauhati Medical College following a call by Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha for a second medical hospital in Assam. Preclinical classes began in 1960 at Ayurvedic College while a permanent campus was built, completed in August 1968, with the main hospital building commissioned in 1971. The Medical Council of India recognized its MBBS degree in 1976, and postgraduate courses in Radiology, Pathology, Anaesthesiology, and Orthopaedics were introduced in 2008. The college offers an MBBS degree (five and a half years including internship), postgraduate MD/MS degrees (three years) and diplomas (two years), as well as diploma courses in pharmacy, nursing (GNM and B.Sc.), laboratory technology, and radiography. It has departments including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic and State Medicine, Community Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, and Otorhinolaryngology. The college is affiliated with Assam University, Silchar, and, from 2010, with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. It also has a Students' Union that holds annual elections.
