ICMR National Institute of Nutrition
The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is an Indian public health, nutrition and translational research centre located in Hyderabad, near Osmania University. It is one of the oldest and largest research centres under the Indian Council of Medical Research, with associated clinical and paediatric nutrition wards at hospitals including Niloufer Hospital, Government Maternity Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and Osmania General Hospital. Its wings include the National Centre for Laboratory Animal Science, the Food and Drug Toxicology Research Centre, and the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau, operating under India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with additional funding from the Department of Biotechnology. Founded in 1918 by Sir Robert McCarrison as the Beri-Beri Enquiry Unit at the Pasteur Institute, Coonoor, it evolved through several name changes, becoming the Nutrition Research Laboratories, moving to Hyderabad in 1958, and being renamed the National Institute of Nutrition in 1969. NIN conducts research in clinical nutrition, toxicology, food chemistry, endocrinology, and more, and is recognized by WHO and FAO as a centre of excellence. It offers MS-MD-PhD programs recognized by several universities, has trained over 1600 health professionals from more than 35 countries, and produced over 150 PhD and MD graduates.
