Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute (SGCC&RI), formerly the Cancer Centre Welfare Home & Research Institute, is a non-profit tertiary cancer care hospital in Thakurpukur, on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was founded in 1973 by oncologist Saroj Gupta to provide specialised cancer treatment to economically disadvantaged patients, on land donated by the family of Chintaharan Das. Starting as a 25-bed facility funded through public donations, it expanded into a comprehensive oncology centre with more than 300 beds across a 16-acre campus, serving patients from eastern India and neighbouring regions. Clinical departments include surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation therapy, haemato-oncology, radiology, pathology, microbiology, a molecular genetics laboratory, dialysis services, pain and palliative care, and tobacco cessation clinics, with treatment programmes for breast, gastrointestinal, gynaecological, thoracic and head and neck cancers. The institute conducts postgraduate medical education, clinical training, and research in cancer diagnosis, radiotherapy and molecular oncology, supported by a specialised medical library. It participates in public health initiatives such as nicotine replacement therapy awareness programmes, collaborating with institutions in India, Japan and the United Kingdom. SGCC&RI is affiliated with the Union for International Cancer Control and has been recognised by the European Society for Medical Oncology for integrated oncology and palliative care initiatives.
