Goa Medical College Bambolim

Goa Medical College (GMC) is a public medical college and hospital in Goa, India, recognized as one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia. Its roots trace back to a 'Medicine Class of Nova Goa' started in 1691, followed by a 'Medicine and Surgery Class' in 1801, before the 'Medical-Surgical School of Goa' received its definitive start on 5 November 1842. The school survived a colonial government decree in 1851 that closed other medical schools, producing about 1,327 doctors and 469 pharmacists over time. After India's annexation of Goa in 1961, the school was administered by the University of Bombay, and in 1986 it came under Goa University, being renamed from 'Medical-Surgical School' to 'Medical College'. Originally located in Panjim, it moved to Bambolim in 1993 as part of Goa University's medical-hospital teaching complex. The institution includes affiliated centers such as the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, T.B. Cunha and Chest Disease Hospital, Rural Health and Training Centre, and Urban Health Centre. It offers MBBS, MD, MS, and PG diploma courses, with admissions through NEET-UG and NEET-PG. Notable alumni include Dr. Froilano de Mello, Dr. Francisco Luís Gomes, and novelist Agostinho Fernandes.
