Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, known as Deccan College, is a public deemed university in Pune, India, focused on postgraduate study and research in Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit & Lexicography. It was established on 6 October 1821 as Hindoo College under Mountstuart Elphinstone, using funds from the former Peshwa's Dakshina Fund. The institution was later renamed Poona College after merging with an English school in 1851, and became Deccan College in 1868 upon moving to its present campus near Yerwada. It temporarily closed in 1934 due to lack of funds and was reopened in 1939 by order of the Bombay High Court as a postgraduate and research institute for Indology and Social Sciences. It was incorporated by Poona University (now University of Pune) in 1948. In 1990, the Government of India's H.R.D. Ministry granted it Deemed University status, which took effect in 1994. The institute currently has three departments—Archaeology, Linguistics, and Sanskrit and Lexicography—and houses two museums, the Museum of Maratha History and the Museum of Archaeology. It has produced over 500 PhD dissertations and, as of 2016, was involved in excavating the Indus Valley civilization site of Rakhigarhi in Haryana.
