Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, known as Bhagat Phool Singh Women's University, was established by the Government of Haryana in August 2006 at Khanpur Kalan village in Gohana, Sonipat district, as the first women's-only state university in North India. Its roots trace to a gurukul for girls founded in 1936 by social reformer Bhagat Phool Singh, who was assassinated in 1942. His daughter, Subhashini Devi, later expanded the institution, founding a Girls' College (1967), Education College (1968), Ayurvedic College (1973), Mahila Polytechnic (1984), TIG Bhainswal Kalan (1999), and Law College (2003); she received the Padma Shri in 1976. The university has around 7,000 students and offers education from nursery through doctoral levels, with departments including English, Foreign Languages, Laws, Commerce & Management, Social Work, Pharmaceutical Education, Economics, History and Archaeology, Political Science, and Physical Education. It houses several constituent colleges, including a Medical College for Women and a School of Engineering & Sciences for Women. It is the first Indian university to set up a UGC Area Study Centre for Indic and Asian Studies, and it has international collaborations with universities in the USA, UK, and South Korea. It also operates a Front Line Demonstration Centre supporting local farmers.
