SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

A school of education, sometimes called a college of education or 'ed school,' is a division within a university devoted to scholarship in the field of education. Education is treated as an interdisciplinary branch of the social sciences, drawing on sociology, psychology, linguistics, economics, political science, public policy, and history, applied to elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education. Historically, schools of education trace their roots to 19th-century normal schools, with universities beginning to offer instruction in pedagogy after the Civil War. By the 1930s, schools of education expanded to train educational administrators and specialists such as guidance counselors. Typical programs offered include Master of Arts, Master of Education, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, and Educational Specialist degrees, as well as teacher certification and licensure programs. Schools of education have faced criticism for low academic standards and an alleged overemphasis on administrative topics rather than substantive content knowledge.
