Miranda House
Miranda House is a constituent college for women at the University of Delhi, India, founded in 1948 by university vice-chancellor Sir Maurice Gwyer. The college's foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten, and its red brick buildings were designed by architect Walter Sykes George. Starting with 33 students and six academic staff in 1948, the college grew significantly, reaching over 4,000 students and 18 departments by 2012. Miranda House pioneered science education for women at the University of Delhi, beginning with a B.Sc. Honours Botany course in 1948, later adding B.Sc. General in 1963–64 and B.Sc. Honours teaching in 1971. The college offers undergraduate programs including B.A. Programme, B.A. Honours in subjects like Economics, English, and History, B.Sc. Honours in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology, as well as postgraduate M.A. and M.Sc. programmes. It also provides foreign language certificate courses in French, German, and Spanish, and short-duration computer application courses, including a free course for visually challenged students. The Miranda House Library acquired its first book on 22 July 1948, initially housed in a single room before expanding to a dedicated building.
