Bankura Sammilani College

Bankura Sammilani College was established on 1 September 1948 by the Bankura Sammilani Registered Society to promote higher education in Bankura and neighbouring districts, starting with 100 boy students and 6 teachers of intermediate science. Initially a boys-only trust college, it became a government-aided college on 22 April 1977 and shifted to co-education from the 1992–1993 session. The college was first affiliated with Calcutta University from 6 August 1948 and came under the affiliation of Burdwan University in 1960. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is the first NAAC accredited college in Bankura District, holding a B++ grade. Admission to undergraduate courses is based on merit through open counseling via the WBCAP Portal, following publication of Higher Secondary Examination results. The college introduced B.Com and B.Sc in 1959 and B.A in 1970, initially running in three shifts, now reduced to two. It currently offers 16 honours courses across Arts, Science and Commerce. Extra activities include Spoken English classes with BBC Bankura Branch, a Computer Literacy Program with Webel Informatics Limited since 1996, and courses with the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India since 2009. Notable alumnus Subrat Dutta is an actor.
