Puducherry Technological University (PTU) is a Government Funded Technical Institute (GFTI) under the central government and Ministry of Education of India, functioning as a public technical and research university in the Union Territory of Puducherry. It was established in 1984 as Pondicherry Engineering College (PEC) under the Seventh Five Year Plan, with approval from the University Grants Commission, and was affiliated to Pondicherry University. In 2021, it was upgraded to a university, inaugurated by then Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on 13 September 2021. The campus, located at Pillaichavady near Pondicherry, spans 180 acres and includes departmental buildings, a library, hostels, and sports facilities. PTU offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across 14 departments in engineering, science, and humanities/business administration, as well as doctoral programs. It has constituent and affiliated colleges including Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology and Women's Engineering College. Student life includes various technical festivals like Genesis, Intronix, and Mechnium, along with a robotics club, Marakriti. Notable alumni include Vijaye Raji of OpenAI and Ragy Thomas of Sprinklr. In 2024, NIRF ranked the university 201-300 in engineering rankings.
