BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, is closely linked with the Topiwala National Medical College, one of the oldest medical colleges in the city. The hospital was established in 1925 when Dr. A. L. Nair, proprietor of Powell and Co., donated two acres of land and funds to set up a well-equipped hospital, naming it after his mother, Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair. Earlier, in 1921, the National Medical College had been founded nearby through donations from the Tilak Swaraj Funds, initially affiliated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay. Later, a donation from Mr. MN Desai led to the college being renamed Topiwala National Medical College. In 1946, the Municipal Corporation of Bombay took over both the college and hospital, after which Bombay University affiliated the twin institutions. Since then, the campus has expanded from two acres to twenty acres by 2006, offering training in more than 25 medical and allied branches, including nine superspeciality courses. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the hospital served for four months as a dedicated COVID-19 treatment center, successfully treating 6,000 patients before resuming its role as a tertiary care hospital.
