IIIT Sonepat is one of the 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology established under a Public-Private Partnership model, following a bill introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, on 18 March 2013. It began admitting students in the academic year 2014–15, initially functioning from the campus of NIT Kurukshetra, which acted as its mentor institute. On 9 August 2017, the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017 conferred it the status of Institute of National Importance. Admissions are conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA) and Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) based on JEE-Main ranks. The institute offers B.Tech programs in Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, and Data Science Analytics, with intakes of 120, 60, and 60 students respectively. Classes were shifted in 2018 to the secondary campus of IIT Delhi at Rajiv Gandhi Education City, and later in 2022 to a transit campus at SBIT, Sonepat-Bahalgarh Industrial Area. First, second, and third-year students currently study at the SBIT campus, while fourth-year students remain at the IIT Delhi Technopark campus. Hostel arrangements include on-campus housing for first-year students, accommodation at Stanford International School for second and third-year students, and residence for girls at the IIT Delhi Technopark campus.
